Bruno Guimaraes insists he will be a Newcastle player until they win some silverware - a wait that has gone on for more than half a century.

The Brazilian has become one of the stars of the current squad, signing shortly after the club's Saudi Arabian owners began pouring funds in the first-team. Guimaraes was captured from Lyon and has gone from strength to strength in the middle of the park.

Such exploits have attracted the interest of some of Europe's biggest names, who could pay £100million to land Guimaraes. That would be more than double what Newcastle themselves paid and the player himself recently visited Paris with talks taking place between his advisors and PSG, who are thought to be the frontrunners for his signature.

Despite the obvious temptation Guimaraes maintains he will be a Newcastle player until they win first major trophy since 1969. He told the Chronicle: "That is what I want. Let's see what will happen but that is exactly what I want for this club. What's true is that there's still a lot to achieve."

Guimaraes has formed an impressive midfield partnership with Joelinton, another man whose future is uncertain. Unlike Guimaraes, whose contract runs until 2028, Joelinton's deal will soon be up and Eddie Howe has confessed he could be sold on.

Newcastle's riches have led to huge expectations but their top-four finish last term was very much ahead of schedule. They've been brought back down to earth this term and currently sit ninth - meaning they're unlikely to match last season's achievements.

The Brazilian admits to a sense of frustration that the team haven't been able to match last season's exploits: "I am enjoying it here a lot - I have never felt so loved at a club before. It is lovely how much the fans love me, I love them as well. But this season has been a mix of things for me. I want more wins and at least get the club back into Europe again."

He also added: "I am very disappointed with how the season has been, crazy really. We have two or three games and we are very good, then two or three when we are very poor. I am really tired and disappointed. But I know I have to keep going. It has been a different season for us (compared to finishing fourth last term) but we have had problems with injuries. Just crazy really."

Newcastle also haven't been aided by the absence of Sandro Tonali, their marquee summer signing. The Italian midfielder scored on his debut against Aston Villa but is currently serving a lengthy gambling ban.
