Charles' secret gesture to public - after learning last week of cancer diagnosis
Buckingham Palace's shock announcement that King Charles has been diagnosed with cancer was made on Monday evening, however the Monarch has reportedly known for a week.
Charles' cancer was picked up whilst he was in the hospital for a separate issue - a benign enlarged prostate - and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has noted that it was "caught early".
The King has already "commenced a schedule of regular treatments" according to the palace, but will not be taking part in "public-facing duties" on the advice of his doctors whilst his treatment is ongoing. However, Charles reportedly insisted on making one last appearance before beginning his treatment as a secret gesture to the public. And Charles wasn't the only senior royal to carry on with business as usual in light of the diagnosis, with Queen Camilla also attending a poignant engagement despite the difficult news she had received about her husband.
"The King has known about his diagnosis since early last week, insisting on going to church in Norfolk on Sunday and waving warmly to well-wishers," the Mail reports. "Camilla also stoically insisted on opening a new Maggie's cancer care unit in London on Wednesday in the knowledge that her husband was about to have treatment."
Charles is said to have personally informed his son Prince Harry about his diagnosis on the phone, and the Duke of Sussex has now arrived back in the UK to see his father, with Meghan staying behind in California with the couple's two children.

With Charles unable to undertake public engagements for the time being and Kate also off-duty until Easter, as she recovers from a "planned abdominal surgery" that she recently underwent, the Royal Family currently faces a shortage of working members able to take part in official engagements.
While Prince William has been off-duty to focus on his family as his wife recovers, he is returning to work this week, and Prince Edward, who also recently took a break from duties is expected to return shortly too - according to The Independent.
The King "remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible," the palace has said, and in the interim period will "continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual."
