Prince Harry was personally called by his dad, King Charles III, to tell him of his cancer diagnosis.

It was revealed by a Buckingham Palace statement on Monday that the King has been diagnosed with the disease, but it's not thought to be prostate cancer amid his recent surgery. It's also said the King personal spoke to all of his siblings and children to inform them of the news.

A source close to Harry has said it's expected the Duke of Sussex will travel to the UK in the coming days following the news.

The statement by Buckingham Palace read: "During The King's recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.

"His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual. The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

"His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer."

It's thought Charles will now take a lengthy spell away from his duties and no return date has been confirmed. Palace officials confirmed the King would be looking forward to doing so as soon as possible and he will continue to receive his government Red Boxes as usual throughout his period of treatment.

The latest news comes after Buckingham Palace revealed last month that he was to undergo treatment on an enlarged prostate.

While Charles has never needed to call on a fellow royal to stand in for him when he is abroad or undergoing any medical treatment during his tenure is King, there are seven people who could do just that as he deals with his cancer diagnosis.

The counsellors of state - members of the royal family who can deputise for the monarch if he is abroad or unwell - include the Duke of Sussex, who lives in California after stepping down as a working royal.
