Piers Morgan has paid tribute to his former colleague Kate Garraway's late husband Derek Draper, who was laid to rest in a service that was held in London earlier this week.

It was announced last month that psychologist and author Derek had passed away, aged 56. It came following his highly-publicised experience with Covid, with him having been in hospital for over a year during the pandemic. A funeral was held on Friday, with a host of celebrity pals and Derek's wife Kate, 56, having been in attendance. Her former colleague Piers, 58, who had worked with her on Good Morning Britain, was among the guests present.

Following the ceremony, he took to Instagram to further pay his respects to Derek. Piers shared the order of service in a photo, with it seen on a table beside a glass of wine. Alongside the photo, he paid tribute to Derek and his family.

Piers wrote: "Cheers, Derek. You made life more interesting, challenging and fun for everyone who knew you." He went on to discuss Derek's wife Kate and their two children Darcey, 17, and Billy, 14, in the post. Piers wrote: "What a lovely service. Kate, Darcey and Bill did you proud. RIP."

The journalist had previously paid tribute to Derek following the news of his death last month. Piers wrote at the time: RIP Derek Draper. A brilliantly clever & funny man who fought his covid health hell with such courage & resilience, helped every step of the way by his magnificent wife ⁦‪Kate‬⁩ whose loyal, loving, selfless devotion was truly astounding."

He recalled speaking to them at his annual Christmas party in 2019, writing: "[It was] just after Kate got back from doing I'm A Celebrity during which the country got to see at first hand what a brilliant marriage they had. They talked excitedly that night about renewing their wedding vows the following summer. But just three months later, Derek got the virus, was rushed to hospital, and their near-4yr nightmare began. This is a heartbreaking day for Kate and their two lovely children Darcey and Billy, and for Derek's family. My deepest love and condolences to them all."

Kate announced her husband's death on the platform last month. She wrote: "I'm sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away. As some of you may know he has been critically ill following a cardiac arrest in early December which, because of the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications."

The TV presenter continued: "Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days and I was by his side holding his hand throughout the last long hours and when he passed. I have so much more to say, and of course I will do so in due course, but for now I just want to thank all the medical teams who fought so hard to save him and to make his final moments as comfortable and dignified as possible."

Kate concluded the post by writing: "Sending so much love and thanks to all of you who have so generously given our family so much support. Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life."
