Meghan Markle may have fallen in love with her Givenchy wedding dress, but it seems not everyone was a fan - including Queen Elizabeth II.

Fans waited with bated breath back in 2018 as the Duchess of Sussex emerged from the burgundy Rolls Royce outside St George's Chapel to finally give everyone a glimpse of her gown. Meghan opted for a simple white wedding dress which featured an open bateau neckline and three-quarter length sleeves.

While many thought the Duchess looked elegant, it seems the late Queen found the dress "flamboyant" and thought it wasn't fit for a divorcee. Before her relationship with Prince Harry, Meghan had been married to Trevor Engelson.

While Queen Elizabeth never publicly voiced her opinion about Meghan, she did confide in her cousin Lady Elizabeth Anson. The pair used to speak on the phone on a daily basis.

In an extract from Ingrid Seward's new book, shared with the Daily Mail, Lady Elizabeth said the Queen had just one thing to say about Meghan's gown. She believed it was "too white" for the Duchess of Sussex.

In the Queen's opinion, it wasn't appropriate for a divorcee getting remarried in church to look "quite so flamboyantly virginal". It's also believed she wasn't happy with the then-Prince Charles waling Meghan down the aisle.

Charles took on the privilege of walking his soon-to-be daughter-in-law down the aisle after her father, Thomas Markle, didn't make the ceremony. Thomas was supposed to walk Meghan down the aisle, but he was outed from the wedding after staging a series of paparazzi photographs.

It was Harry's decision to ask his father to stand in. "I asked him to and I think he knew it was coming and he immediately said, 'Yes, of course, I’ll do whatever Meghan needs and I’m here to support you," Harry recalled in the documentary Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70.
