Tyson Fury breaks silence after pulling out of Oleksandr Usyk fight

A "devastated" Tyson Fury has vowed to reschedule his fight with Oleksandr Usyk after pulling out having suffered a cut in training.

Fury was due to take on Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight world title on February 17 but has pulled out with two weeks to go after suffering a cut above his right eye. Fury, who has been training in the Middle East before New Year, has insisted he will reschedule the bout.

He said: "I am absolutely devastated after preparing for this fight for so long and being in such superb condition. | feel bad for everyone involved in this huge event and I will work diligently towards the rescheduled date once the eye has healed. I can only apologise to everyone affected including my own team, Team Usyk, the undercard fighters, partners, and fans as well as our hosts and my friends in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia."

Usyk fears Fury will not be ready for several months with the Ukrainian exploring the possibility of still fighting in two weeks with Filip Hrgovic a potential opponent. Usyk has been training near Valencia in Spain and has not fought since stopping Daniel Dubois last August.

A spokesperson for promoter Frank Warren said: “Whilst this is still breaking news it is clearly a massive disappointment, after the work that has been done by so many people to finally deliver this historic event to the world. Once the Doctors have appraised Tyson’s eye, we will have a better idea of the period of recovery needed. Once known we will work diligently with all the stake- holders and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to reschedule this fight as soon as possible and will of course keep everyone updated with developments.”

Fury was rumoured to have been dropped in sparring by former cruiserweight world champion Jai Opetaia but while the claims were quickly denied, rumours continued that the Brit was struggling in his training camp. Fury was almost beaten by former UFC world champion Francis Ngannou who dropped his rival in the third round before suffering a split-decision defeat after 10 rounds.
