The Apprentice viewers declared the show was "comedy gold" after one team made a blunder with their guest welcome drinks.

18 contestants have all signed up to take on the tasks in the hope of impressing Lord Sugar and taking home a huge £250,000 investment. The BBC show returned on Thursday night, where the contenders were split into boys and girls teams. They were sent to the Scottish Highlands and tasked with putting on high-end away days for corporate clients.

The female team’s hope of impressing bigwigs from the hospitality industry crumbled when they gave fishcakes a sweet, instead of savoury coating. However, it was the boys team that shocked viewers with their plan for the posh day out. They planned to serve their guests water as a welcome drink, instead of the usual bottle of fizz.

In an effort to save money, their scheme backfired. Viewers took to social media where they couldn't believe their plan. One fan said: "I’m tee total and I would expect them to serve a glass of some cheap sparkling p**s tasting drink for a welcome drink and not water lol #TheApprentice." Another added: "A welcome drink of water is… comedy gold. Like a slap up dinner of space raiders #theapprentice."

Someone else said: "'The welcome drink is going to be a bottle of water'. Welcome back." A fourth commented: "Bottle of water as a welcome drink….are they ok, I wouldn’t let them organise a bake sale." A viewer quipped: "Water for arrival drink? WATER? #TheApprentice," as another wrote: "I'd take water as a welcome drink...as long as it was a big San Pellegrino, served alongside a pint of craft beer or a large gin + tonic. #theapprentice."

A fan joked: "Welcome drink is a bottle of water may aswell go all out and spoils them with a glass of water from the tap #TheApprentice." As someone else said: "Imagine getting to your day of forced company fun and your welcome drink is WATER."

The guests were already unhappy when they arrived for their meal on the away day and straight away asked for alcohol to be served. The boy team all gathered in the kitchen to discuss if they were going to give into their paying corporate guests.

In the end, they decided to give in and serve two bottles of prosecco and one beer. It ended up costing the boy's £40 and they ultimately lost the whole task after making a huge loss. Lord Sugar's aide Tim Campbell was sent to watch over the male team and was left horrified by their decision at trying to serve water.

The decision was brought up in the boardroom, as the boys squabbled over misunderstanding the price serving alcohol would cost. Speaking to The Mirror ahead of the new series, Tim revealed: "We care about the candidates doing the best that they can and if something's going catastrophically wrong, both Karen and I have said, ‘Have you thought about this?’ Just to give them an indication, but our role is to be in the background, to let them get on and then see how they perform. But sometimes our faces tell that story in much better ways than anything."
