A body modification influencer has died after she's believed to have caught a virus on holiday.

Aline Barone Barbosa, from Brazil, suffered heart complications caused by contracting dengue fever. Local health authorities are carrying out an investigation to confirm whether she became infected in her hometown or during a recent trip.

She leaves behind 22-year-old daughter Luiza Barone, who paid tribute online saying her mum was her "soulmate" and "best friend". Aline frequently shared content related to tattoos, piercings, and her travels on Instagram.

The influencer, 37, lived in Siqueira Campos, located west of Sao Paulo. According to the municipal health authorities, she recently travelled alone to Curitiba, about 200 miles south of her hometown and after returning home, she then began to suffer from strong flu-like symptoms on 22 January.

She was taken to a medical centre in Siqueira Campos three days later. Aline was then transported to a hospital in the city of Jacarezinho where she passed away on January 26, 12 hours after being admitted.

The authorities are currently investigating whether the case is autochthonous, meaning if it originated in the town where she lived or was imported from Curitiba. Aline was buried in Siqueira Campos on January 27.

Aline had a degree in psychology, although she didn't work in the area, and was also well-known in her hometown for her animal rights activism. On social media she shared regular updates with followers of her passion for tattoos, travelling and her other interests.

Her daughter Luiza stated: "Losing you mum who was my best friend, my mother, like me, my soulmate, you were the love of my life! I don't know what I will do without you, but whatever it is, it will be for you. I will continue for you and you will still to be the reason for my life.

"And I just have to thank you, thank you for the example of a person you were, strong, intelligent, courageous, friendly, happy, and a very good person, someone with the biggest heart I've ever seen, and I'll never meet again someone like that... Mum, you were intense, you lived your way, I admired you a lot for that, I looked up to you, you didn't care about others ... I'm very proud to be the daughter of that amazing woman you were!"

According to local reports, the number of dengue cases has been sharply rising in Paran State in recent weeks. The State Department of Health said 3,911 new cases were confirmed in the last week. At least three deaths have been confirmed, but another 14 fatalities in January are still under investigation. Dengue is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti insect, also called the yellow fever mosquito. The deadly insect also spreads other diseases such as chikungunya and zika.
