The family of an auntie and “treasured friend” who was tragically killed in a horrific bus crash have touchingly paid tribute to her.

Catherine Finnegan, originally from County Galway, had been in central London, when she was hit by a bus outside the Victoria bus station. The 56-year-old tragically died despite the best efforts of emergency services who scrambled to the scene at just before 9am on Monday 29 January.

The Metropolitan Police have continued their investigation into the tragedy as Catherine’s family described her as a “beloved daughter, sister, partner, most adored auntie and treasured friend”.

They continued: "She will be remembered as a very unique lady who had the fast Irish wit and who made her family and friends so very proud of her bright, clever personality. She was a whirlwind in any room and lit up this world with her energy, enthusiasm for life and joy. She will be forever in our hearts."

Officers continue to support the heartbroken family, as the driver of a bus, a woman in her 40s, was also taken to hospital but has since been discharged.

Images shared on social media showed the number 13 bus after it had collided with a bus shelter. A cordon was set up as police investigated the scene and London mayor Sadiq Khan said: “I’ve been told about the tragic news that a pedestrian has lost their life as a consequence of an accident. My thoughts are with the bereaved family, it’s really important that we allow them to be informed first about this tragedy.

“There is a full investigation under way. I’m sure I speak for all of us when I say our thoughts and prayers are with this person’s family.”

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman previously told the Mirror: “We were called today (January 29) at 8.58am to reports of a road traffic collision between a bus and a pedestrian on Terminus Place, Victoria. We sent some resources, including two ambulance crews and a medic in a fast-response car.

“We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance. We treated three people at the scene. A person was then taken to hospital and another patient was assessed and discharged. Unfortunately, despite our teams’ best efforts, a person was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Our investigation continues and any witnesses who have not yet come forward are asked to call 020 8543 5157 quoting CAD 1417/29Jan.
