The Biden administration had announced in February of the previous year that it would be providing this advanced bomb to Ukraine. However, extensive testing was necessary before dispatching the new version, which lasted several months. The Army, overseeing the testing process, reportedly gave its approval after deeming the precision-guided bomb fit for deployment to Ukraine.
Despite the air-launched version's inception in 2019 and successful testing, a sale was not realized until the US made the strategic decision to donate it to Ukraine as part of a comprehensive aid package. The Biden administration has already supplied Ukraine with a restricted quantity of weapons with longer-range capabilities.
