Met Office issues major 550-mile long warning threatening 85mph winds

The Met Office has issued a major 550-mile long severe wind warning, threatening gusts of up to 85mph, as they have cautioned of "danger to life".

Despite the ongoing mild weather for many, with temperatures pushing into the low teens, two massive wind warnings covering all of Scotland and swathes of the North have been issued.

They cover from the Shetland Islands down across Scotland, to Middlesbrough, and Harrogate, including areas just north of Leeds, as well as hitting parts of Northern Ireland.

There are two weather warnings in place, one covering the Shetland Islands down across northern parts of Scotland, including the likes of Inverness and Aberdeen, and the other from there, south into England and Northern Ireland. Both wind warnings kick in tomorrow morning and last through until the evening.

Of the two, the worst of the wind will be seen further north, where gusts could reach as much as 85mph in places. Elsewhere, gusts of up 75mph are expected and over northwest Scotland, the windy conditions will be combined with heavy rain during tomorrow morning and afternoon.

Such is the strength of the wind, that the Met Office cautioned there could be "danger to life" along the coast due to "large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties" as well as flying debris.
