A man has revealed the ‘mastermind’ plan he came up with to get revenge on a scam artist who conned him out of money. Confessing that he had initially been dubious about the stranger’s claims before handing over the cash, he ultimately decided to give him the benefit of the doubt.

“So, one day at a gas station, this guy comes up to me looking all sorry for himself,” he explained. “He's like, ‘Hey, can you spare $10? I need to put gas in my car to visit my dying mother’. He even gives me his number, swearing up and down he'll pay me back.

“Now, I might be naïve, but I wasn't born yesterday. I knew the chances of seeing that $10 again were slim to none. But, hey, what if his story was true? I couldn't be the reason someone didn't get to say goodbye to their mom. So, I lent him the cash.”

The man said unsurprisingly didn’t hear from the stranger, so decided to give him a text a few days later and miraculously he replied apologising and promising to send the money over as soon as possible. He added: “After a few rounds of this, it's obvious I'm not getting my money back, and eventually, he ghosts me.”

Annoyed but patient, the man decided to get his revenge. He confessed: “I hit up all the popular second-hand selling websites and started posting ads. I'm talking hot-ticket items: cars, iPhones, cozy houses, job offers – all priced to sell, but still believable. “For the contact info? I used his number and threw in a name with a cheesy pun (think ‘Owen Munny’... get it? Owing money. Ha!”

After leaving the ads up for several days, the man called the scammer from his girlfriend’s phone to give him one last chance of getting his money back. He wrote: “I can't even get a word out before he starts yelling at me to leave him alone. Looks like my plan worked! Some of the ads even stayed up for months!”

People reading the petty revenge story on Reddit were overjoyed by his plan. One person wrote: “You f**king mastermind you! I LOVE IT!!!!” Someone else added: “10/10 for creativity!” And a third person replied: “Love this kind of revenge. Genius.”
