A three-year-old child has been found dead in a washing machine, it has emerged.
The prosecutor's office did not provide further details, or confirm a report in the daily Le Parisien newspaper that the girl was found alive in the washing machine by her father and another family member and died in emergency care an hour later.
A special unit for the protection of minors is leading the probe.
Her dad and another member of the family reportedly found her in the machine during a dinner.
The washing machine had not been switched on but its doors shut automatically, according to reports.

The girl was at the home in her family’s flat in Paris’s 20th arrondissement west of the city centre when the tragedy happened.

They did not provide anymore details, or confirm a report she was found alive by her dad and a family and died in emergency care.
She reportedly around 11.30pm despite the efforts of emergency services.
Initial reports say the death was triggered by "choking", a source claimed.

There was no trace of violence on the girl's body and an autopsy will be performed on the child's body.
The girl's 48-year-old dad, aged 48, said the door of the appliance was closed and it had not just turned.

The Mirror reported how a 20-year-old mum suffered a fatal electric shock when she put her hand in a washing machine thinking her load had finished.
Viviane Rodrigues was putting on a wash at her home in Juazeiro, north-east Brazil, this week.
Investigators said she suffered a massive shock when she put her hand in the machine while it was still running to retrieve some items of clothing.
Her husband rushed her to the local hospital emergency unit, but Mrs Rodrigues - mother to a nine-month-old son - was declared dead on arrival.

She was buried in Gameleira do Di on 16th June. She leaves behind a husband and a baby son.
It is not the only washing machine tragedy that has been reported in recent years.
A young child died after being found in the appliance that had been switched on.
The pre-school age child was found unresponsive in a front-loading washing machine, Stuff reports.
A spokesperson said that officers were notified of an incident in the Christchurch, New Zealand.
