Repetition, especially for an artist, has to become boring after a while and it appears that those who ink tattoos are no different with tattooists sharing the most common and the most boring. Professionals will create thousands of designs during their careers and also ink designs brought in by their clients, but often the requests they receive are at best, variations on a theme and make the artist feel they are on a production line. Posting on Reddit, one person said they were told that rose tattoos were extremely common – and boring.

They said they were in a parlour and that: "I found a new artist and asked for ropes going down my leg and he said 'thank f****** God it's not another rose'. So I suppose roses are a common thing? The artists also bantered about who was gonna draw the short stick for doing the 'pinterest' tattoo, lol, so like lions going onto flowers and s***."

And according to Business Insider, artists dislike a design that starts off supposedly being special to the individual but quickly becomes mass-produced. An artist in Glasgow, Scotland, said that trends can soon become overdone and go out of style. Called Hepcat, he said that people should avoid designs that celebrities have they will be copied many times and will go out of date fast.

He said that people should "base their design on personal choice", and said there are three tattoo trends he believes are overdone, and three that will never go out of style. Hepcat said the amount of people asking for dream-catcher tattoos, which became popular in 2009 because of stars such as Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato, became too much, but interest in them has since waned.

Another he said had become too popular was the infinity symbol tattoo, particularly the symbol surrounded by bird silhouettes, which had been overdone, as had lion designs, as these were also popular with celebrities and professional footballers. On Reddit, one artist said that around 80 percent of their clients were women and that children names were popular "because a lot of clients don’t have good ideas for a meaningful tattoo until they get a child".

But a customer warned: "I'll never ever put the name or a date of a person on my body. Like tattoos, but with a person there can go so much wrong. Even your child," while another warned about using foreign languages with a different alphabet, saying: "Japanese writing on their chest, they don't know what the f*** it even means." Another artist warned against tattoos with thin, wispy text that may look good at first, but if you want to incorporate words into your tattoo design, use larger lettering which reduces the chances of blurring.
