Prince Harry "could have had his moment" while King Charles and the Princess of Wales recover from surgery, a royal expert has claimed.

Both Charles and Kate are stepping back from public duties during their recuperation for separate procedures. It was announced on Wednesday that Kate was admitted to the private hospital on Tuesday for successful abdominal surgery, which Kensington Palace said was planned.

She is said to be "doing well" but will remain in the exclusive clinic for between 10 to 14 days, and is not expected to return to official duties until after Easter. Meanwhile, Charles will have hospital treatment next week for an enlarged prostate and take some time off to recuperate.

With the pair out of action, and Prince William also taking time off to care for his wife and three children, Charles’s slimmed-down monarchy – with three of the most senior royals missing – has been put under pressure in a way not seen before during his reign.

And according to royal expert Robert Jobson, if Harry hadn't quit as a working royal, it could have been a very different story. He told True Royalty TV's The Royal Beat: "Since we’ve lost Meghan and Harry, and Andrew is no longer taking part as a working royal, the amount of duties [William and Catherine] are expected to carry out has increased.

"The workload on the King and Queen is high as well. So I think ... they do need that backup. And maybe Harry will be looking from the other side of the pond thinking that this would have been his moment, and he could have been very useful."

Charles – a known workaholic – often stays late at his desk dealing with his correspondence and official papers into the early hours, but he has generally enjoyed good health and keeps fit by walking and gardening. He has postponed several engagements and will have been ordered by his doctors to take it easy.

Queen Camilla is still carrying out engagements, joining the Princess Royal, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke of Kent and Princess Alexandra as the current working monarchy – with the latter two appearing increasingly frail in recent years. All are in their 70s and 80s except for Edward, who turns 60 in March, and Sophie, who celebrates her 59th birthday on Saturday.

Joe Little, of Majesty magazine, said the health troubles have compounded the problem facing the small band of working royals. He explained: "The working members of the royal family have been under pressure to maintain the level of engagements undertaken by a much larger team in years gone by.

"Suddenly removing three of the most senior players because of health issues compounds the problem considerably, but at least the King will be out of action for only a relatively short period."
