Netflix recently dropped a disturbing true-crime documentary called American Nightmare about the gripping abduction case that was dubbed the 'real-life Gone Girl'.

From the creators behind the hit docuseries The Tinder Swindler, American Nightmare is a three-part series focused on the true story of Denise Huskins' abduction. An intruder broke into Denise and her boyfriend Aaron Quinn's home and drugged both of them before kidnapping Denise.

Aaron rushed to the police for their help but suspicions immediately fell on him. In a shock twist, Denise returned home 48 hours later and the police and media immediately refused to believe they were victims of crime. Instead, they accused Aaron and Denise of tricking the public and wasting resources.

In the docuseries, Aaron's ex-fiancée Andrea is mentioned several times adding to the confusion of the case. Not only did Aaron and Andrea argue about his unresolved feelings for Andrea, but the kidnapper - Matthew Muller -even implied that Andrea was the intended target of the abduction, not Denise.

In 2015, Aaron and his girlfriend - who both worked as physiotherapists - lived together at a house in Mare Island. They started dating the year before and even worked in the same place as Aaron's ex Andrea. Aaron kept in touch with her and even sometimes hinted at wanting to get back together with her.

Denise discovered text messages between Aaron and Andrea in March 2015, leading to a massive argument between the two after a night out. "I finally just put my foot down and said, 'Look, I don't deserve this.' And it was a couple of weeks of kind of going back and forth," Denise explained to ABC News of her reaction to the scenario.

The two met up to decide whether they wanted to move forward in their relationship. In the interview, Denise said she brought pizza and the duo chatted on the sofa for "most of the night".

"We talked about how it would be difficult; we had to rebuild trust. But as long as he was willing to really give this a full shot, then we could try again," she said. Following the conversation, Aaron and Denise decided to move past the betrayal and focus on the future of their relationship.

On the same night of the conversation in late March, they were awoken by an intruder who restrained the couple, drugged them and kidnapped Denise while Aaron remained blindfolded and sedated at home. When he woke up on the living room sofa downstairs at about 11 a.m., Denise was gone. Soon after, Aaron got a text demanding £11,000 ransom and warning him not to call the police.

While being held captive, Denise learned from the intruder that Aaron's ex-fiancée Andrea was the intended target of the abduction. The information shocked viewers as it is still not known why she was initially targeted. Aaron and Denise also said he and Andrea were mentioned by name during the abduction.

"The intruder says, 'We have a problem,' and he says to Aaron, 'Do Denise and your ex-fiancée look alike?'" said Melanie Woodrow, an investigative reporter with San Francisco ABC station KGO. According to an FBI affidavit, the kidnapper didn't realise he restrained the wrong woman until too late.

The kidnapper, Matthew, might have made the mistake as Andrea used to live in the same house with Aaron when the two were still together. Following the abduction, the police talked to Andrea to learn more about her relationship with Aaron. "I mean, we get along okay at work. It's been sad, but I asked him to stop coming into my office," Andrea explained during the questioning.

"He would want to hug me and, you know, sometimes he would try to kiss me, but I told him that wasn't okay and, um, he knew it." She also believed that Aaron "would be open" to getting back together but presumably had no knowledge of Denise and Aaron's plans of moving forward and forgetting about Andrea.

There isn't a lot of information about what Andrea is up to now. She didn't appear in the documentary and only showed up in archival footage from the police questioning.
