You should never use hotel iron while on holiday, warns travel expert

Ironing your holiday outfits to immediately cram them into a tiny Ryanair-approved suitcase seems a little reductive.

Even if you steam your clothes to sheer perfection, by the time you get to the hotel they'll inevitably be all creased and scrunched up. If your Hawaiian shirt and matching shorts are too crinkly to wear, you may reach for the iron.

It's hardly ideal to start your holiday with a pile of clothes that need ironing, while everyone else heads downstairs for happy hour - but needs must, right? Well, one travel expert has warned holidaymakers to think twice before ironing your clothes with a hotel iron.

Gilbert Ott is a frequent flyer and founder of the travel site God Save The Points. He advises rolling your clothes rather than folding them to reduce creases and as a way to save space. "It's worth inspecting the hotel iron, or testing it on a non-external-facing garment before trusting your soon-to-be crisp white shirt," he told the Mail. "Why? Pilots and others notoriously use irons to reheat pizza and other food during layovers."

If you're not keen on tainting your favourite blouse in marinara sauce - Ott recommends making use of your steamy shower to iron out the creases on your outfit. Simply place the item of clothing on the towel rack or behind the bathroom door and let the heat do its work.

If you're travelling with children, un-ironed clothes are probably the least of your worries. Kids can get bored and restless on any journey, but long-haul flights can be particularly difficult for them.

Luckily, an ex-flight attendant has shared a handy trick she swears by to keep your little ones occupied in the air. Nichola Knox went viral after she posted on a video on Instagram explaining how she uses painter's tape to keep her child entertained.

"I swear to you, it's great on the plane but also on vacation," the mother said. She suggested a variety of uses for the tape including making letters, counting, making a 'snack' holder, and even creating a swing for toys. Knox also attached two strips of tape across the tables which acted as a 'truck bridge'.
