McDonald's McNuggets are a tasty treat best enjoyed when you're seriously hungover, or just in need of some comfort food - but did you know there's a name for each individual shape they come in?

The popular fast-food chain is well known for its tasty offerings, including chicken nuggets that are perfect for dipping into your favourite sauce. But the more eagle-eyed people may have noticed - if you're not too busy shovelling them in when you order them - that they all come in different shapes. But why?

Turns out it's not by chance, but actually rather to do with quality control at the restaurant - and they've named each of the four shapes.

There's the boot, the bone, the bell and the ball. So next time you're devouring your 20-share box of nugs, take a look at the different shapes and names. The boot is arguably the best-shaped nug to pick up lashings of ketchup. Shaped with a little flick out, it's perfect for dunking. The bell is thinner at the top and the bottom, but chunkier around the middle. The bone is longer and flatter around the edges, and the ball is circular.

A YouGov poll asked the public what they thought the best chicken nugget shape was, and a whopping 36% voted for the boot. 22% said bone, 13% said bell and 7% voted for the ball. The boot has likely won the most favourable shape as it's "the perfect equilibrium of dipability and fun."

Did you also know that there's a reason the McDonald's sign is red and yellow, and it's not just because it's a fun aesthetic. Psychologist and leading colour expert Karen Haller, said: "Looking at the positive psychology qualities of red and yellow in relation to the fast food industry, red triggers stimulation, appetite, hunger, it attracts attention.

"Yellow triggers the feelings of happiness and friendliness. When you combine red and yellow it's about speed, quickness. In, eat and out again." She continued: "Yellow is also the most visible colour in daylight, which is why the McDonald's M can be seen from a far distance. The language of colour is communicated quicker to the brain than words or shapes as they work directly on our feelings and emotions."
