Liverpool could sign Bruno Guimaraes for £32million per season for the next three years as the Reds plot a move for the Newcastle midfielder.

The Brazil international is someone Liverpool are admirers of, after the Reds 'made contact' with Newcastle over a potential switch for Guimaraes back in May. However, Guimaraes stayed put at St James' Park after they secured qualification for the Champions League before penning a new five-year deal in October.

Newcastle's current financial situation may swing Guimaraes' future back into the balance, though. This is after the Magpies recorded reported losses of £73.4m earlier this week when announcing their latest financial results. There is a real possibility Eddie Howe's side could be forced to sell one of their star assets - such as Guimaraes - in the summer in an attempt to balance their books.

And according to AS, Guimaraes 'agreed' to a release clause in his contract worth £98m, which is payable in three instalments of £32m. The report added that Guimaraes is one of the players the Newcastle board have selected to help them 'settle accounts', while Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Chelsea have been noted as possible destinations should the Magpies part ways.

Guimaraes has been a superb addition to the Newcastle midfield since arriving from Lyon in January 2022. At the time, the Magpies were firmly in a relegation battle, but he - alongside fellow arrivals Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and Dan Burn - helped keep the Toon in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old continued to impress in the 2022/23 campaign and starred as Newcastle finished fourth, with Guimaraes scoring four goals and grabbing five assists in 32 Premier League appearances. Guimaraes hasn't been at his best this season but his overall performances since arriving at St James' Park was rewarded with a bumper new long-term contract earlier this season - something Howe was delighted to get done.

Speaking at the time, Howe said: "I'm delighted to get Bruno signed and committed to the long-term future of the football club. He's such an important player and he's done so well since he joined the club. He's been a huge success since he's been here so I just hope that he can continue in that vein and carry on his success with us."

Guimaraes said: "I'm absolutely delighted. The fans have made me feel at home since my first day here and I feel so loved in my life. I'm so happy here. It's a place that is so comfortable to be and I hope to keep making the supporters happy and helping the team do well. That's my goal, because there are no words to describe how happy I am to be here."
