Migraines are no joke, and can be completely debilitating.

Often seen as just a headache, migraines tend to cause severe pain in the form a 'throbbing' sensation and can last up to three days. Early-warning symptoms include feeling dizzy, having difficulty speaking, and changes in your mood - depending on which type of migraine you suffer with.

More than six million Brits have to deal with 'episodic migraines', meaning they endure at least four severe headaches a month. While progress has been made in offering patients the first-ever targeted drug for migraines, many are still suffering in silence. Dr Danielle Wilhour is a neurologist and migraine specialist in the US. She says chocolate - despite its deliciousness - is considered a 'popular food-based trigger'.

"Cocoa is thought to influence serotonin release, possibly contributing to migraine pathogenesis," Wilhour added. "Although chocolate contains serotonin and its precursor tryptophan, with higher levels in 85 per cent cocoa content, existing studies haven't confirmed a direct link to migraine induction."
