A woman was baffled when she was asked to swap plane seats to allow a mum to sit with her five-year-old child, despite having deliberately left them to sit on their own.

The woman explained she and her boyfriend were on a flight to Menorca and had paid extra for their tickets to guarantee they'd be sitting together. After they boarded the plane, a family of four got on and began looking for their seats, and it was established that three of their seats were all on the same row, while one seat was next to the couple, two rows in front of the rest of their seats. The woman said she assumed the two children would sit with one parent while the other parent sat by themselves, so was shocked when the family decided to leave their five-year-old child by themselves next to the couple.

In a post on Reddit, the woman explained: "So me and my boyfriend booked a flight to Menorca. It was our first holiday together and we paid extra to sit next to each other. We got on the plane and for a while no one sat next to us. However, towards the end, a family got on - two kids and two adults. We heard them say their seats and I heard the mother say her seat was next to me. Only she didn't sit next to me. She, the other adult, and one of the children sat together and put a child who was no more than five next to me even tho the other seats were two rows back. Surely you would sit both kids with one adult and have the spare adult sit next to me."

The woman had no problems sitting next to the little girl, but a few minutes later the girl's mum approached and asked if one of the couple would move seats so that she could sit with her daughter - despite sitting her by herself on purpose. When the couple refused to move, the woman claimed they were "disrespectful".

She continued: "The mother approached us and asked would me or my boyfriend move so she could sit next to her kid. I said no because we paid to sit together so if we moved we wasted our money, and she just continued to look at me and say 'But my kid can't sit alone', and I told her, 'You sit there and put the kid with the other adult' and she acted like I had just slapped her across the face."

The mum claimed it was wrong of the woman to expect her not to sit with any of her children, and said she and her boyfriend were not "attached at the hip" so should have no problem swapping seats. The woman put her foot down and refused to move, and the problem was eventually resolved by another passenger who said there were spare seats on his row.

Commenters on the post were largely on the couple's side, with many branding the parents as "entitled" for expecting people to move out of their designated seats. One person said: "You were not in the wrong. The audacity of entitled parents/people never ceases to amaze me."

While another added: "You are so not in the wrong. You paid extra for assigned seating and the parent is being deliberately manipulative," and a third wrote: "Someone can ask politely but if you say no then that is the final answer."
