A stunned tourist has captured footage of what could be a lynx-like big cat prowling through the British countryside.

Lewis Dailly, from Glasgow, was on a family trip to Coniston, Cumbria when he spotted the mysterious animal roaming wild and started to film it.

“I was getting ready in the morning, looked out the window, and I’ve seen something that caught my eye – like an animal thing," he said. “So I picked up the iPad and I just started filming it. I was a bit shocked. I thought it looked like a lynx. It's something I'm not used to seeing.”

Lewis, who now lives in Wolverhampton, only caught a few moments of footage before he rushed off to alert his family and by the time he got back, the animal had gone. Sharing the video online, Lewis had several people agreeing that it looked like a “possible lynx”.

One viewer said: “Looks like a lynx to me, from the tail to the full fur, it moves like a lynx. They have a sort of heavy grace when walking. Well done.” Another commented: “Until you see one with your own eyes, I get it – you just wouldn’t believe it! Great find, great spot, great footage.” But others weren’t so sure.

“Looking at the size of the bushes, I’d say that was a domestic cat,” wrote one person. Another complained: “These videos have the same quality as the supposed Bigfoot ones.” To give the sighting context, Lewis also shared a separate photo of the field where it took place.

“Everyone’s entitled to their opinion,” he said. “Some people think it looks like a lynx – they're saying by the movement and the stockiness of it as well. And some other people are trying to say that it's not. They're just trying to say it's bad quality so you can't actually tell.”

In any case, the encounter has made a believer out of 21-year-old Lewis. And he’s not alone – tens of thousands of people follow online groups espousing the existence of wild big cats in the British countryside.

“I used to think there were big cats in the UK,” he said. “But then I thought it wasn’t possible until I’ve seen this. I’d seen it on videos but not with my own eyes.” Having seen sheep grazing on the field before, he reckons a big cat might have been tempted there by the prospect of food.
