A glaring typo has been spotted at a new train station - a project which cost more than £400million to complete.

Brent Cross West station became the first new mainline station to open in London in 10 years last month. It is located just off the A5 Edgware Road in northwest London, a location which makes the typo even more obvious.

A sign directing commuters to Edgware Road actually reads "Edgeware Road" - with an extra "e" - yet it slipped through the net at the hub which is on the Midland Mainline between stops for Cricklewood and Hendon.

But the reaction online has been rather mixed with some non-fussed about the gaffe. One Reddit user said: "I reckon this is quite a common typo a lot of people make (not that people making signs for railway stations should be making such typos)."

Others suggested the typo is actually quite a common error - even among Londoners themselves. One man put on Facebook: "Someone told me off for making that spelling error in 1987 and I still have not got over it." Another person posted on Reddit: "If I was new to the area and you asked me over the phone to meet at Edgware Road, I would definitely spell it Edgeware."

Another sign in the station, which was originally not due for completion until 2030 but was brought forward to ensure it’d be ready before thousands move into new homes in the area, spells the name of the street correctly. In photos online, beside the sign sits Bruce the duck, the user’s partner’s disability support duck.

A spokesperson for Govia Thameslink Railway, which runs the station said: "We’ll look into how to get this rectified." Thameslink services now connect the new station to central London, with journey times to St Pancras taking as little as 12 minutes. At peak times, up to eight trains an hour pass through the station, providing links to Luton Airport and the Elizabeth line via Farringdon.

Passengers are served by six trains each way per hour during off-peak hours and weekends. Teams navigated the complexities of working on a live railway, as well as challenges faced by the Covid-19 pandemic, to get the hub ready last month. Sadiq Khan joined hundreds of local residents and rail enthusiasts to celebrate the opening of the facility.
