Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may have enjoyed a somewhat peaceful start to 2024 after a rollercoaster past 12 months.

Exactly this time last year, Harry's bombshell memoir Spare had just hit the shelves and he was never far away from the headlines. The memoir included a string of claims against the royals including that Prince William physically attacked him, and that King Charles put his own interests above his son's. He also made allegations against his stepmother Queen Camilla and claims she "sacrificed me on her personal PR altar".

As well as the book, Harry embarked on a promotional tour for it giving interviews in both the USA and UK, including a somewhat fiery one with ITV's Tom Bradby, where he denied he and Meghan labelled the Royal Family 'racist' in their previous tell-all chat with Oprah Winfrey.

But throughout the beginning of 2023 around the book's release, Meghan kept an unusually low profile and didn't join Harry for any interviews and appearances, despite joining him for many in the past.

And according to The Telegraph, she was understood to have been more wary than him when it came to his memoir. A source told the publication that "media-savvy" Meghan may have voiced gentle concerns about whether releasing the memoir was the right move. However, once Harry decided to press ahead with the project, she is said to have offered him her full support.

The source said: "Is this the way she would have approached things? Possibly not. But she will always back him and would never have got involved in promoting such a personal project. This was about his own life, his journey and his own perspective." Meghan's absence seemed to fuel cruel rumours about the state of the couple's marriage and left many pondering what her next career move would be without her husband.

But speaking recently to True Royalty TV's The Royal Beat, royal expert Richard Kay said Meghan's distancing strategy could be about to pay off - and she could herald "big change" if she really wanted to. He explained: "There was a view I think by her handlers that her own brand could be damaged if she was seen to be very close to Harry, so she didn't go on any of the promotional tours for the book, join him for any of the interviews.

"She's allowed him to have a space on his own to deal with it and she’s equally stood back from all these court cases that he’s embarked on. I think that is a strategy and maybe it’ll bear fruit next year. She is looking actively, I think, for a role ... she wants to do something relevant. We heard lots of stories during the year that she was going to run for office. I don't think that's going to happen, not yet anyway.

"What they need to do going forward is build bridges in the United Kingdom [and] in particular with their family; perhaps get back onto social media in some way, don't be so hostile [to the media], be more open about what they’re doing. I think there's room for big change there if they want to."
