Meghan Markle and Prince Harry "have fallen" in Hollywood and are at risk of being viewed as "expendable", according to royal experts.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex set their sights on a career in Hollywood after stepping down from the Royal Family in 2020. However, they've been met with disappointment after losing their exclusive $25million (£19million) partnership with Spotify.

Harry also divided fans with the release of his debut memoir Spare and the couple are yet to announce any new projects. Now, the Sussexes have found themselves as the butt of a number of jokes, which royal author Phil Dampier believes is a sign of trouble.

Meghan and Harry were at the centre of a savage joke during the Golden Globe Awards, as host Jo Koy blasted them for being paid "millions of dollars for doing absolutely nothing". During his opening monologue, the comedian spoke about Imelda Staunton's work in The Crown.

"How great was Imelda Staunton in The Crown, wasn’t she amazing? Her portrayal of the Queen was so good Prince Harry called her and asked her for money," he said. Jo acknowledged the savage joke and continued: "Like I said, I didn't write all of these! That one wasn't mine! Prince Harry and Meghan will still be paid millions of dollars for doing absolutely nothing - and that's just by Netflix!"

Netflix chief executive Ted Sarandos was seen laughing at the joke in the audience. It's not the first time Meghan and Harry have been savagely mocked, with the couple featuring in skits in South Park and Family Guy.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Phil said: "A couple of years ago Harry and Meghan would not have been humiliated in this way but they are now the butt of jokes, even among the woke luvvies of Hollywood. When you become figures of ridicule you are in trouble."

He said they were popular when they first moved to America, but this changed when people became "fed up with their constant moaning". Phil added: "They expect criticism from the press and social media, but attacks from the showbiz world show how far they have fallen."

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams pointed out that Meghan, who signed with talent agency Williams Morris Endeavour in April, has yet to announce any upcoming projects. However, the Duchess of Sussex has teased there are exciting projects her and Harry have in the pipeline as part of their comeback. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, she said: "We have so many exciting things on the slate. I can't wait until we can announce them, but I'm just really proud of what we're creating."

Meghan didn't reveal exactly what the projects are. Richard warned the Sussexes risk being "viewed as expendable if they continue to produce so little". He suggested this could throw them into crisis as their $100million (£78,000) contract with Netflix expires next year.
