An "unhinged" mother-in-law has taken things too far after throwing herself a 'grandma shower'.

It isn't always easy to bite our tongues when it comes to the actions and opinions of our in-laws. But one woman has drawn the line after confessing her mother-in-law changed her entire baby shower and altered the gift registry to suit her. "I'm going to decorate my baby's nursery at my house with circus animals, so I created a registry for myself," said the grandmother.

The annoyed daughter-in-law says she began noticing weird behaviour from her baby's grandmother - including calling their child "hers". "This rubs me the wrong way but my husband tells me to ignore her," the frustrated mum-to-be told Reddit recently.

But in the spirit of keeping the peace, the expecting mother decided to let her mother host her a baby shower, despite inviting all her own friends, and involved her in a number of the event details.

Speaking about what happened, the anonymous woman explained: "She said they [the mother-in-law and her friends] made an agreement a long time ago that they would celebrate each other's kids' weddings and births. My husband and I eloped and declined a reception for her friends since we don't know them.

"My mother-in-law told me that I owed it to her to let her throw the baby shower since I hurt her friends' feelings by not having wedding reception. I asked if I could invite my friends, and she said no, that this was for her friends.

"My husband and I spent hours on our registry, and my mother-in-law asked for it so she could share with her friends. She said she forwarded the registry on. She asked me what design I wanted on my cake and cookies - I told her flowers because I am decorating the nursery in a garden theme."

But the woman faced a shock when she arrived at her baby shower and saw a 'granny-to-be' sash and the room filled with circus animal balloons and food. The mother added: "At first I thought that maybe the floral theme was just too difficult, so I rolled with it until it was time to open presents. Every present was some sort of circus animal - nothing on my registry.

"I was a little confused and even went so far to check my registry to make sure I hadn't goofed up and changed everything. I thanked everyone for their gifts and tried to sound as gracious as possible, but I was so confused."

The woman's husband came to the shower towards the end and said: "What's up with all the circus animals? This isn't what we asked for." He turned to his mother and asked, "what did you do?".

His mum said: "I didn't like the theme you chose for my baby. I'm going to decorate my baby's nursery at my house with circus animals, so I created a registry for myself. My baby is going to need a room at my house so I threw a shower for myself."

The annoyed daughter-in-law added: "I lost my composure and told her that she would not see my baby and to stop calling the baby hers, and my husband told his mum that she's delusional if she thinks we're going to allow this. She started crying and said we are just withholding her baby from her.

"We've been getting texts from his family since the shower, calling us selfish and ungrateful and saying we ruined her joy of being a grandma. Are we being unreasonable?"

The response from Reddit users was generally supportive of the couple and many noted that the mother-in-law likely won't change her ways. One individual said: "My husband's mum became as unhinged as this when we got pregnant. It began with her telling us she'd come stay for a month before to ensure she is at the birth of her baby. We hadn't invited her nor wanted her at the birth."

Another said: "What is with grandmothers trying to either steal babies or steal their own sons away from their spouses? It's so freaking creepy and absolutely insane. This woman is not in a healthy enough headspace to be anywhere near your child. I'd be afraid for the baby's safety."

One other wrote: "This is next level scary stuff. My mother-in-law has overstepped so many boundaries with my kids, my middle child in particular. And her shenanigans really had a certain stranglehold on my marriage until fairly recently. It sounds like your husband is starting to see things the way you do. Don't let him revert back to excusing her behaviour."

Another added: "This behaviour by your mother-in-law is completely unhinged and it's absolutely best that you do this now instead of down the road after she's just continued to overstep boundaries.

"Thank god your husband is on board because if he wasn't, this would be even worse."
