A woman has tragically died after a fire erupted at a block of flats in Hackney, east London.

Emergency services rushed to the ground floor flat located on Homerton High Street at around 8.23am on Saturday. But despite their best efforts the woman passed away at the scene.

Met Police has confirmed that the victim was in her 40s. Officers have informed her loved ones following her death. An investigation has been launched to identify the cause of the fire at Nisbet House. Police said the incident is not believed to be suspicious.

A spokesperson for the force told The Mirror: "Police were called at 08:31hrs on January 6 by the London Fire Brigade following a fire at a flat in Nisbet House, E9. Officers attended along with other emergency service colleagues.

"A woman in her 40s died at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time. An investigation is under way to establish the cause of the fire. It is not believed to be suspicious."

Dozens of firefighters were at the scene of the five-floor building this morning. They sadly found the woman inside the flat and pronounced her dead at the scene. A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade commented: ''Sadly a woman has died following a flat fire in Hackney.

"Six fire engines and around 30 firefighters responded to a fire on Homerton High Street, in a building of five floors. Part of a ground floor flat was damaged by the fire. A woman was found in the flat, and sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"The Brigade's Control Officers took the first of seven calls reporting the fire at 0823, and the fire was under control by 0939. Firefighters from Homerton, Leyton, Stoke Newington and surrounding fire stations attended the scene. The fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service."

The Mirror has contacted the Metropolitan Police for comment.
