Kate Garraway dreamed of a second wedding to husband Derek Draper, but sadly it never happened.

The couple originally tied the knot in 2005 and were due to renew their vows on their 15th anniversary after romantic Derek proposed to Kate again after she got out of the I’m A Celebrity jungle in November 2019.

After spending a month apart while Kate appeared on the ITV show, Derek is said to have “fallen in love” with his wife all over again and had planned to get down on one knee in front of the cameras as they were reunited on the famous I’m A Celebrity bridge.

But the political lobbyist was so overcome with emotion at seeing the love of his life for the first time in weeks, he didn’t do it. Luckily, thanks to a bit of encouragement from their children Darcey and Billy, now 17 and 14 respectively, Derek got a second chance to confess his love for Kate moments later.

After leaving the jungle their kids leaped out to surprise their mum - with daughter Darcey pointing out her dad had forgotten his proposal plan. "Oh Dad – you didn’t do it," she exclaimed, so Derek immediately got down on one knee and proposed.

Obviously Kate said 'yes' for the second time, and the happy couple were planning to walk down the aisle once again. But just a few months later, the whole family’s lives changed forever when Derek got seriously ill at the start of the Covid pandemic in early 2020 and would never recover.

Weeks before tragedy struck, an excited Kate revealed that daughter Darcey was going to be in charge of planning her parents' second nuptials “so it could be very interesting”. She joked to Prima magazine: “I think she will probably want me to look like Kendall Jenner on the day which is going to be tough… I would love to look like Kendall Jenner as well, so good luck with that!"

Kate and Derek’s wedding was originally scheduled for the end of the summer 2020, but they were forced to put their plans on hold when the Covid pandemic gripped the world. Darcey had been planning to spice up her dad's wardrobe, jokingly telling him he couldn't wear a polo shirt to the ceremony. While she wanted to get her mum in a flamboyant dress.

Then when Derek got ill, Kate told the Mirror they were forced to put their plans on hold and said: "We’d planned the wedding for the end of summer, but I don’t suppose we’ll be booking anything now because we don’t really know what we can do."

Kate added: "Darcey’s taken control. She had big, big visions for the whole thing, and she was like: ‘Dad, this is the time to update your wardrobe, you can’t just wear polo shirts.’ She wants something very, very flamboyant for me as well, and also big numbers, so we’ll have to wait for that reason alone if we can’t all gather together."

After almost four years of health battles with Covid and a recent heart attack, Derek sadly passed away in hospital at the age of 56. Announcing the sad news on Instagram alongside a photo of Derek before he got ill, she wrote: “I’m sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away.”

She continued: “As some of you may know he has been critically ill following a cardiac arrest in early December which, because of the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications. Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days and I was by his side holding his hand throughout the last long hours and when he passed.

“I have so much more to say, and of course I will do so in due course, but for now I just want to thank all the medical teams who fought so hard to save him and to make his final moments as comfortable and dignified as possible. Sending so much love and thanks to all of you who have so generously given our family so much support. Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life."
