Loose Women react to 'saddest' Derek Draper news' and praise strong Kate

Loose Women's emotional stars shared a touching message to Kate Garraway on Friday's show, after the sad news her beloved husband Derek Draper had died.

Host Kaye Adams was visibly moved, as she revealed the sad news on the show just hours after psychologist and author Derek's death was confirmed. Kaye and co-star Linda Robson remembered Derek, as the show sent their love and support to his family.

ITV's Good Morning Britain star Kate released a heartbreaking statement on Friday morning, as she broke the news that Derek had died aged 56, after a long health battle. Derek was critically ill after being rushed to hospital last month following a cardiac arrest.

The former political advisor and lobbyist, who shares two children with wife Kate, fought a lengthy battle against Covid-19, after first being hospitalised with the virus in March 2020. Derek fell into a coma at the start of the global pandemic and was put on a ventilator - becoming Britain's longest suffering Covid-19 victim as he spent 13 months in hospital.

The dad-of-two returned home from hospital in April 2021 but still required care and assistance, as he struggled to return to full health following first contracting the viral disease. Derek suffered a number of health complications as a result of the damage caused to his body by the virus. After the news broke, Loose Women opened with the panel appearing somber.

As they welcomed viewers to the latest show, Kaye shakily announced the death of Derek before reading out Kate's emotional statement. The host understandably sounded close to tears as she revealed Kate's words on her husband's passing.

Kaye said: "We are gonna start today with the saddest of news. This morning, Kate Garraway announced the death of her husband Derek Draper." She went on to say: "We have all been moved by Kate and her family's journey over the last few years, and are so full of admiration with how they dealt with incredible challenges."

Linda then revealed: "They were my neighbours for many years. I saw them often out and about together, it's really, really sad. They are the loveliest family." Kaye added: "Kate, you displayed strength and love in ways I can barely contemplate. We are sending you all of our love and best wishes."

It comes after Kate announced the news on social media, weeks on from Derek being rushed to hospital. Confirming she was with him until the very end, she told her followers: "I’m sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away. As some of you may know he has been critically ill following a cardiac arrest in early December which, because of the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications.

"Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days and I was by his side holding his hand throughout the last long hours and when he passed. I have so much more to say, and of course I will do so in due course, but for now I just want to thank all the medical teams who fought so hard to save him and to make his final moments as comfortable and dignified as possible.

"Sending so much love and thanks to all of you who have so generously given our family so much support. Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life." Earlier on Friday, This Morning's Dermot O'Leary and Alison Hammond reached out to the ITV star, sending her "all their love" as they announced Derek's death on the show.

Alison said: "Now we have some really sad news to bring to you. Derek Draper, the husband of our very own Kate Garraway, has sadly passed away. Kate has just this posted tribute." Dermot then read out Kate's Instagram statement, before Alison continued: "We really wanna say that all of us here at This Morning are sending all of our love to you Kate and of course Darcy and Billy."
