Prince William received a touching message of support from an 81-year-old woman after an incredibly tough week for the royal family.

January 2023 saw the release of Prince Harry's explosive memoir Spare, which made headlines around the world - and rocked the royals. Nevertheless, William seemed in good spirits just two days later as he stepped out for an official engagement in Liverpool.

William and Kate were in Merseyside for the opening of the new Royal Liverpool University hospital. Their trip marked their first public appearance since the release of Spare, which had gone on sale in the UK on January 10.

The bombshell book saw the Duke of Sussex make a number of claims about William and Kate, including that they "both howled" when they heard about his infamous Nazi costume in 2005.

Despite the controversial claims, the royal couple looked relaxed as they greeted hospital staff and thanked them for their hard work. Some members of the public were also able to catch a glimpse of the couple, and one pensioner was thrilled to speak to William, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Royal fan Sylvia, 81, told the Prince: "Keep going Will, Scousers love you," to which he replied: "I will do." Sylvia saw the Prince as she arrived for a hospital appointment and said she couldn't believe she managed to speak to him. Their conversation came moments after William chose to ignore comments about Prince Harry's book outside the hospital. As the royal couple arrived, one reporter shouted: "Were you hurt by the comments in Harry's book, Sir?" but got no response.

Other sensational claims Harry made in the book included that he got into physical altercations with William. In one extract, Harry alleged that William called his wife, Meghan Markle , "difficult", "rude" and "abrasive", resulting in an argument that reportedly saw William knock him to the ground.

Detailing a second altercation, Harry also claimed that his older brother "lunged" at him during peacekeeping talks after Prince Philip's funeral. The royals chose not to respond to any of the bombshell claims, instead sticking to their "business as usual" approach.

It remains to be seen whether Harry will ever reunite with the royals. Rumours swirled that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were desperate to spend Christmas with The Firm in the UK, but instead they spent the festive period at their home in Montecito, California. The Royal Family, meanwhile, put on a united front as they gathered at Sandringham.

Royal author Phil Dampier believes the Sussexes missed out on the perfect opportunity to repair their relationship with the Royal Family. He suggested bonding at Christmas would have also boosted Meghan and Harry's popularity.

"Harry and Meghan have let it be known that they see 2024 as their year of redemption, to which my reaction is good luck with that. It's a trite phrase dreamt up by their Hollywood PR people and in reality means very little. Actions speak louder than words," he said.

Phil warned Harry and Meghan "need to do things which will convince the public" that they want to "redeem themselves". Speaking to Fabulous magazine, he added: "The royals put on a show of unity at Christmas , with even Prince Andrew's ex-wife Fergie being allowed to walk to church and join them for lunch. The message was clear - everyone was welcome except Harry and Meghan."

Phil suggested Harry and Meghan are now aware that they can "never compete with an ancient institution" such as the Royal Family.
