Doctor issues warning to anyone who uses a Stanley cup every day
One of your New Year's resolutions might be to stay more hydrated, but it turns out our beloved water bottles may be causing health issues.
Brands like Stanley have propelled into the mainstream over recent years, popularised by TikTok stars stressing the importance of staying hydrated. The 40 oz tumblers have become the latest craze, and are now stocked in a slew of retailers such as Urban Outfitters, Harrods, and Amazon.
The Stanley Quencher H2.0 - one of the cult favourites, will set you back up to £47.18, and comes in a variety of colours. It features a screw-on lid, reusable straw, and is rated 4.3 stars out of a staggering 16,611 Amazon reviews.
However, water bottles such as Stanley's design, which have a straw, could be 'ruining your skin'. The claim comes from one doctor who has issued a recent warning for those hooked on hydration.
Dr Chisom Ikeji is an expert in all things health and skincare. She regularly posts advice on TikTok and has garnered an impressive 230,000 followers.

In a recent post, Dr Ikeji explained how her mother was doing micro-needling - a popular skincare treatment to renew skin cells - and advised her client to stop smoking to avoid worsening the wrinkles around her mouth. Commonly known as 'smoker's lines' - the thin vertical wrinkles form over time as smokers over-use muscles around the mouth.
"Then I thought, what do I do that is exactly like this?" The doctor said. "It's using my water bottle religiously. As someone who loves to stay hydrated, I use my water bottle all the time and I am constantly sucking on that straw."
Dr Ikeji described this movement as 'very similar' to smoking but added it was 'maybe not to the same extent' as inhaling a cigarette. "So, listen to this message and stop using your straw water bottle constantly."

People took to the comments section, with many users grateful for the warning. One person wrote: "Thank you! I get lip filler now to combat deep straw lines from straw use for a decade." Another commented: "Dr your skin is flawless. [I'll] be doing what you're doing." While a third added: "Good call out! No more straws."
However, not everybody agreed with the advice, with some users saying they care 'more about being hydrated than getting wrinkles. "I think I just want to grow old gracefully without stress," one person wrote. "All these things we keep being told not to eat, drink, do - [is] so exhausting."
Dr Andrew Kane is an award-winning aesthetics doctor who specialises in Botox, fillers and cosmetic dermatology. Speaking to the Mirror about the warning, he said: "Repetitive facial movements, such as smoking, furrowing your brow, or frequently using a straw, can exacerbate the formation of wrinkles. Around the mouth these movements often lead to 'barcode lines' or smokers' lines. Interestingly, these lines aren't exclusive to smokers."
To prevent these wrinkles forming, the expert recommends using SPF consistently, and adding retinol to one's skincare regimen. " Lifestyle changes like quitting smoking and minimising repetitive facial movements can also play a crucial role in preventing the development of these lines," he added.
The Mirror has contacted Stanley for comment.
