A woman has been branded "petty" by her sister for taking back her offer to buy her wedding dress over a "snide" comment that was made at a family dinner.

Weddings can be expensive, and not everyone is lucky enough to have family members who are willing to help cover some of the mammoth costs associated with planning your big day. But one bride-to-be who did have some financial help from her older sister had the offer rescinded after she made a "disrespectful" comment to her sibling during a family dinner, causing her to pull back her generous offer to pay for the wedding dress.

The bride's sister explained in a post on Reddit that she is a "self-taught graphic designer", and as she makes decent money from her career, she agreed to pay for her sibling's wedding dress as a "wedding gift". However, she noted that her sister has always been "critical" of her job and recently said it wasn't a "real job" while the pair were at a family gathering.

The woman was "hurt" by her sister's comments, and said that if she wasn't going to respect her career, then she could forget about the wedding dress that would be paid for using the money she earned via that career.

In her post, she wrote: "I am a self-taught graphic designer and have worked hard to build my career. My sister, on the other hand, has always been critical of my job, calling it a 'hobby' and not a 'real job'. Our parents passed away a few years ago, and I've been more of a parental figure to her since then. We've had our ups and downs, but I've always tried to support her.

"Recently, she got engaged and was over the moon about planning her wedding. She found her dream dress, but it was way out of her budget. Knowing I'd saved a bit, she asked if I could pay for it as her wedding gift. I agreed because I wanted her to be happy.

"However, a few days ago, we had a family gathering where she introduced her fiancé to our extended family. During the dinner, she made a snide remark about my career, implying that I was still 'playing with my computer' while others had real jobs. I was hurt and confronted her later. Things escalated, and I told her that if she didn't respect my career, she shouldn't expect me to fund her wedding dress with the money I earned from it. She accused me of ruining her wedding and being petty."

The woman said she feels "torn" because as much as she wants to support her sister, she also feels "disrespected" by her comments. And people in the comments were largely on her side, as they said it isn't her responsibility to pay for the dress.

One person commented: "It would be a lovely gesture to pay for her dress, but it's not your responsibility. It would be the type of generous gesture reserved for people who treat you with respect," while another added: "Do not insult the person who will help you financially. Your sister did so she will have to pay the price. She's not happy? Too bad, so sad."
