This hack will make your towels as good as new.

Realising that your towels have become stiff and scratchy after washing them can be really frustrating, especially as the issue can easily get worse over time as your towels are subjected to further use and cleaning.

The stiffness can occur because of a build-up of laundry detergent, which has failed to properly rinse out of the fabric of the towel, giving that scratchy, inflexible feeling to the material. It could also be due to excess of fabric softener which can coat the fibres of the towel. Or it could be a problem that you find yourself tackling regularly if you live in a hard water area.

This hack will mean you never struggle with stiff towels again, and they will be returned to the fluffy, soft condition they were when you first bought them. Content creator Chantel Mila posted the incredibly easy hack on her TikTok account, which is filled with useful cleaning tips and tricks, and has garnered an impressive 1.4m followers.

She explains that all you need to do is mix 500ml of white vinegar with four drops of an essential oil. Then you simply pour it into the drum of your washing machine, which should contain only the towels you are trying to rejuvenate.

Then run a cycle on a hot setting, 40 or 60 degrees Celsius. She explains that this works because "towels become stiff from a build-up of detergent and oils in the fibres". Because "vinegar is acidic and helps strip away this residue and refresh towels." Adding essential oils will help offset the scent of the white vinegar, which may not be to everyone's taste.

"Treat yourself to soft, plush towels," Chantel advises, as this hack will "instantly" soften them again, she claims. The video wracked up nearly 5000 likes, but one user pointed out in the comments that vinegar "can damage your seals" so it's important to be careful when putting it in your washing machine.

Once your cycle has completed you can either air dry your towels or help them along a bit by popping them in the tumble dryer, which Lenor has said on their website is the best way to ensure the highest levels of fluffiness.
