A first look at the new series of the Traitors has teased a twist in store for this year's contestants, with host Claudia Winkleman sharing the news ahead of their first mission.

The BBC reality TV show returns tonight for its second series, after having debuted in 2022. Hannah Byczkowsk, Aaron Evans and Meryl Williams won the first series, with them having shared a prize fund worth over £100,000.

Contestants are divided into Traitors and Faithfuls, with the secretly-assigned former group tasked with 'murdering' the latter group each night. The Faithfuls must work out who the Traitors are and banish them from the game at roundtables.

The second series will introduce 22 new contestants, who will take part in the "ultimate reality game of detection, backstabbing and trust". The players will be competing for the chance to win up to £120,000 at the end of the series.

A teaser clip has just been released, which shows the cast hearing about a twist upon their arrival in Scotland. It's shared with them at their first mission, where they have the chance to win £15,000 for the overall prize pot.

Whilst gathered together at a loch, ahead of the mission, Claudia is heard telling the contestants: "I have also some news." She adds: "This year, on these missions, you're not just playing for money, you are also playing for your lives."

Claudia is seen taking a golden shield from her pocket moments later, before sharing about it: "This players is a shield. [...] This protects you from being murdered by the Traitors, but it does not protect you from banishment."

The host explains to the contestants that there are three available in the first mission alone. She states: "Three of you can win one of these on this mission." Claudia shares that two are located in the loch, whilst the other is on land.

And summarising for the group, she adds: "So to be clear, if you go for a shield, then you might be protected from murder, but at what cost? Basically, what you've gotta think is 'what's more important, your money or your life?'"

During the first season, immunity was typically only available to select group of players after each mission. They visited the Armoury, where just one of them was randomly, and secretly, awarded with the immunity shield. It was previously revealed that there won't be an Armoury anymore.

The Traitors returns tonight on BBC One at 9pm. The first three episodes of the new series will be available on the BBC iPlayer afterwards. Episodes will air on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights throughout the second series.
