A mom heartbroken after her 10-year-old son was shot dead over a lost bike race has vowed to "get justice".

Keith "KJ" Frierson was reportedly killed outside the family's apartment, in Greenholme Drive in Sacramento County, California. Devastated mom, Brittani Frierson, reported that on Saturday afternoon, a second little boy with whom Keith had previously played with fired a gun in retaliation for losing a bike race.

Brittani said: "My baby asked me can he go outside to ride. Not even 15 minutes later, my baby was gone. All because he was enjoying a race with some other kids he considered his friends on his new bike...This wasn’t supposed to happen. It’s not OK.”

The incident occurred around 4:30p.m., according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office. In relation to the incident, deputies took into custody a 53-year-old man named Arkete Davis and his 10-year-old son. According to investigators, the 10-year-old kid took a firearm from Davis' car and shot and killed Keith. Additionally, according to detectives, Davis attempted to dispose of the gun by tossing it into a nearby trashcan.

“Instead of aiding my baby, he tried to hide it. He tried to cover it up. He left my baby there,” Brittani said. “He will pay for this. He will. We’ll get justice for my son. I will get justice for my son.”

Family members, including Nina Trepagnier, Keith's godmother, said they hold Davis responsible for the deaths of both Keith and the other 10-year-old who allegedly committed the murder. “It starts at home," Nina said. This is the parents’ fault. They failed that child. And it took our bay, because they failed him, because they were poor examples.”

Those who knew Keith best remembered him as a loving, selfless, and caring guy during the vigil on Monday night. “He was very funny, always joking, always laughing, super helpful, super dependable, super respectful,” the god mother said. People spoke of Keith as a sports-loving, energetic young man. He was a member of the Jr. Foothill Mustangs football team. His coaches attended the vigil in honor of the young man they referred to as a "gentle giant."

“We’re going to miss him," Nina said. "We’re going to miss him a lot. Shouldn’t have happened, man. I never expected anything like this to happen to anybody I know, especially Keith. Keith was a great kid, man, did not expect this at all.”

The firearm used in the incident, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, was reported stolen in 2017. Davis is a felon and shouldn't have ever been in possession of a firearm, according to deputies.
