One of the UK's rudest streets is set to have its sign reinstated - despite angry protests from locals.

The controversial sign for Slag Lane in Westbury, Wiltshire was spotted on Google Maps lying on its side in 2016, and had mysteriously gone missing two years later.

It's believed that a bus might have knocked it over while turning, though allegations of unhappy residents removing it have also been made.

Despite some newcomers to the area claiming the name of the street was inappropriate, the town council decided against renaming it 'Lakeside View' in 2014. Wiltshire Council said new signs will be installed in early 2024.

Slag Lane was originally named after the slag piles from the town's iron works. On Spotted Westbury, a local Facebook group, numerous calls have been made for the signs to be reinstated - even though "some residents don't like the signs being up". One local said "It's been that name for years, what's the problem?", while another chimed: "Why buy or rent a home in a lane with a name you don't like?"

Wiltshire is also home to other 'rude' street names such as Honey Knob Hill in Swindon and Old Sodom Lane near Lyneham. Other suggestive names include Cuckoo's Knob near Marlborough and Twatley in Malmesbury.

Commenting on the reinstating of the sign, Wiltshire Council said: "It was taken forward to be resolved under local highways maintenance. The new signs were ordered immediately after the meeting. We hope the new signs will be installed early in the new year."
