Choosing a baby name can be tricky, especially when parents can't agree on a moniker no matter how hard they try. To help those expecting in 2024, BabyCenter has looked back at the top 24 names from the last 24 years, including favourites like Mia and Liam. Many of these popular names are still in the top 10 for boys and girls today. Speaking about their 2023 report, it was found Noah, Liam, and Oliver were the top picks for boys, while Olivia, Emma, and Amelia were the most popular for girls.

A spokesperson for BabyCenter said: "Noteworthy trends in baby names include nicknames used as first names, girl names from Barbie and Wednesday, and names inspired by sports documentaries like Beckham and Messi Meets America." However, fewer parents are choosing names inspired by cities, states, and countries, despite travel increasing this year. There's also been a drop in Oppenheimer-related names, and parents have shown their love for the Roy family from Succession through their baby name choices.

A spokesperson for BabyCenter said: "Nicknames are overtaking 'proper' names: Names that were once considered nicknames are now, in many cases, being used on their own as first names. Ellie (No. 15) is more popular than Elizabeth (No. 41) and Eleanor (No.31); Josie (No. 85) outranks Josephine (No. 146); Theo (No. 20) tops Theodore (No. 38); and Leo (No. 8) stands above Leonardo (No.141)."

These are all the names of boys and girls that held the No. 1 spot from 2000 to present, in order:

1. Sophia spent more than a decade as the No. 1 girls' name (2010-2020), and before that enjoyed an additional year holding the top spot in 2007.

2. Emily spent eight years at the top and managed to ring in the new millennium (1996-2003).

5. Jackson also spent six years as the top name for boys (2013-2018).

6. Liam enjoyed four years as the top name for boys (2019-2022) before being usurped this year.

7. Emma spent three consecutive years at the top (2004-2006) and an additional year in 2008.

8. Olivia has now spent three years at No. 1 and currently reigns supreme as the most popular name for girls.

9. The beautiful Isabella spent only one year on top in the 2000s, back in 2009.

10. For the first time in five years, Noah is the new No. 1 boys’ name for 2023. We’re excited to see how long it'll hold onto this position.

These names have not reached No. 1 this millennium, but were mainstays in the top 10 (and have topped name ranking charts throughout the 1900s):

11. Ethan is a dark horse of the early millennium – it only spent one year as the No. 2 name (2009), but sat comfortably in the top 10 boys' names from 2002 until 2016.

22. Though Matthew dominated the top boys' names from the 1980s up through the early 2000s – ranking in the top 10 from 2000 until 2008 – it was soon on its way out.

23. Mia joined the top 10 girls’ names in 2012 and has been rising through the ranks, though it has not ranked higher than No. 5, yet.

24. Abigail has not ranked higher than No. 7 (in 2002), but it has held spots to round out the top 10 girls’ names from 2001 to 2004, and again from 2010 to 2011.
