Prince William allegedly had a brutal instruction for Prince Harry to follow when the duo were at school together.
The Prince of Wales made it clear to his younger brother that he would be in a different social circle to the Duke of Sussex, with their schooling days seeing the brothers separated by William's request. Harry revealed the rule in his recent biography, Spare, which caused shockwaves with controversial claims made by the Duke, who left active duties in the Royal Family back in 2020.
Even then, decisions made by Princess Diana led Harry to believe William "loathed" their school days together because of the "package deal" feel to their dynamic and attires. Writing in his book, Spare, the Duke of Sussex alleged: "For the last two years, he explained, Eton had been his sanctuary.
"No kid brother tagging along, pestering him with questions, pushing up on his social circle. He was forging his own life, and he wasn’t willing to give it up."

He added that "anyone made the mistake of thinking us a package deal," the Independent reported.

Early years for the royal duo were further explored by Prince Harry in his book. He revealed where the "heir and spare" comparisons came from, alleging it was a split nursery which started the divide. The Duke wrote: "Willy had the larger half, with a double bed, a good-sized basin, a cupboard with mirrored doors, a beautiful window looking down on the courtyard, the fountain, the bronze statue of a roe deer buck.
"My half of the room was far smaller, less luxurious. I never asked why. I didn’t care. But I also didn’t need to ask. Two years older than me, Willy was the Heir, whereas I was the Spare."
