Susanna Reid says she drank herself into a health scare - by downing too many cups of coffee.
The 53-year-old TV star has to wake up at the hideously early hour of 3:45am in order to prepare to host ITV’s Good Morning Britain from 6am during the week. As part of her routine to prepare for those early stars, and to have the energy for appearing on screens in the early hours of the morning, Susanna drinks coffee to perk her up.
But after realising she can easily see away eight cups a day, the star was startled when her high caffeine consumption had an impact on her health. Susanna has recalled being forced to take a ‘scary’ dash to the hospital when her voice gave out on her.
And medics advised the star she needs to drink more water and cut down on her coffee intake in order to keep herself ticking over more healthily. Susanna herself was startled to realise just how many cups of the good stuff she gets through each day.

Everyone gets a bit croaky from time to time, but I could not get any noise out of my vocal cords and that's never happened before. I went very quickly to see a specialist, who stuck a camera down my throat, for which I needed a nurse to hold my hand because I found it quite intrusive.”

She continued: “The specialist said maybe I had a virus that I didn't realise I had. Unless we're properly ill, we all carry on working, don't we? I'm not doing anything to boost my immunity, and I should be. The doctor was quite surprised that I don't drink more water and that I drink quite a lot of coffee, so I have tried to cut down a bit.”
Susanna added: “One morning we worked out that I had eight coffees. But I don't drink the whole cup – I have a few sips.”
Susanna has talked about her daily routine with her antisocially early starts in the past. The mum-of-three is awake at 3:40am and gives herself five minutes to wake up before quickly brushing her teeth, throwing on her coat, and taking her car to the Good Morning Britain studios.
In the 25 minute trip, Susanna reads up on the news and reviews information relating to guest slots on the show. She then arrives at the studio and has hair and make-up done before the show starts rolling at 6am. She has admitted to being too busy to eat before the show starts, so snacks on apples and seeds during ad breaks.
The show is off the air by 9am, giving Susanna time to go home and nap before getting up for lunch. She then prepares dinner for her sons before going over material for the following morning on the show - and she’s in bed by 9pm.
She told The Sunday Times previously: “My three boys split their time between myself and my ex. The brilliant thing about my job is that so much of my working day is when they're still sleeping and I'm already at home by the time they're back from school or work."
