No matter how much you want to go to sleep, it can sometimes be impossible to turn your brain off. If you ever struggle to drop off and drift away to the sweet land of nod then read on, as YouTuber Justin Agustin has shared what he claims is a military -grade hack that works in two minutes - anywhere, any time.

Posting on TikTok to his 1.9 million followers, Justin said: “There’s actually a military-proven technique to fall asleep in two minutes after closing your eyes. It’s mind-blowing.” Explaining that soldiers need to be able to get rest in all kinds of stressful conditions, Justin claims they are taught this method in training.

He said: “According to my research, this was developed mainly for fighter pilots, who need 100% of their reflexes and focus, which we know decreases with lack of sleep.” Demonstrating the system, which Justin says is quite simple, he first lays down on a bed and gets comfortable.

He continued: "First you need to calm your body and systematically relax and shut down each part of your body from head to toe, literally. Start by relaxing the muscles in your forehead. Relax your eyes, your cheeks, and your jaw, and focus on your breathing. Now go down to your neck and shoulders. Make sure your shoulders are not tensed up. Drop them as low as you can.”

Next, Justin instructs you to keep your arms loose at your side, including your hands and fingers. He went on: “Imagine this warm sensation going from your head and all the way down to your fingertips. Now take a deep breath and slowly exhale, relaxing your chest, your stomach, down to your thighs, knees, legs and feet. Again, imagine the warm sensation going all the way down to your toes.”

While doing all of this relaxing, Justin says it’s also important to try and clear your mind of any stresses. To do this, it apparently helps to think of two scenarios. Justin went on: “You’re laying in a canoe on a calm lake with nothing but clear blue sky above you. Or, you’re laying in a black velvet hammock in a pitch-black room.”

If you get distracted and start thinking of anything else, Justin advises repeating the words “don’t think” for 10 seconds to get you back on track. Practice it every night for six weeks and once mastered you’ll be able to get to sleep in two minutes after closing your eyes.

In the TikTok comments, people were quick to lend their opinions. One person wrote: “I’m a military brat and was taught this. I also had a veteran as a psychology teacher in college who taught this. It definitely works.”

“My doctor taught me this technique with slight variations when I had insomnia due to PTSD,” another viewer penned. “Trust me it works 100 per cent once you get it down.” In order to get an expert’s opinion, PEDESTRIAN.TV. asked psychologist Dr. Chris Cheers for his thoughts.

He told the channel: “I have no experience with the military, so I couldn’t say if that aspect is correct. However, some of the strategies shown are forms of relaxation strategies that would likely be helpful. This is a technique used in psychology where people learn to consciously tense and relax the muscles in each part of their bodies. It’s a strategy which evidence shows to be useful in managing stress and anxiety — and it helps with sleep.”
