Earlier this month, Prince William and Kate Middleton attended their annual Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey. Their children Prince George, 10, Charlotte, 8, and Louis, 5, were also in attendance.

It was Louis’ first time attending the service, but with his siblings by his side he seemed unfazed by the 1,500 guests, confidently walking inside the venue where he held a lit candle as part of the service. Charlotte especially seemed protective of her little brother, with observers noting she had become a doting big sister to Louis.

The pair have always shared a close bond. In a photo released by William and Kate on Charlotte’s third birthday she is pictured cradling her then-newborn brother on her lap and planting a tender kiss on his forehead. In another photo from Louis' christening in 2018, while everyone else looks at the camera, proud big sister Charlotte gazes at Louis as she holds his hand.

And Louis reportedly has learned to follow his sister’s lead. Prince William revealed in 2021 that the family often play music in the mornings and the kids dance around the house. "Charlotte, particularly, is running around the kitchen in her dresses and ballet stuff and everything," William said. "She goes completely crazy with Louis following her around trying to do the same thing."

As William and Kate's second child, Charlotte is third in line to the throne, behind her father and older brother. Charlotte's full name is Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, a tribute to her great-grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, and her grandmother, the late Princess Diana.

Her protectiveness doesn’t just extend to her younger sibling, according to her mum. During a chat with another parent at an event Kate Middleton reportedly told the mum “Charlotte is growing up really fast. She is the one in charge.”

Princess Charlotte’s grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, reportedly confirmed Princess Charlotte’s boss status while presenting a book to 10-year-old school student, Emily Claya few years ago. When the Queen asked the student if she looked after her younger sister, Clay's mother replied, “It’s the other way around,” and the Queen responded, “It’s like that with Charlotte and George”.

William and Kate released a new picture of their children yesterday in the black and white photo, which was taken by Josh Shinner, the children are seen sitting on a wooden bench smiling and looking relaxed. The couple posted the picture on social media, writing "Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas, from our family to yours! W & C".
