King Charles struck the right note in his second Christmas message with a seasonal call for peace and goodwill.

The simple message of “do to others as you would have them do to you” applies more than ever – both at home and abroad. The death tolls in the Hamas-Israel war and in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine are appalling.

Slaughtering civilians is immoral and the leaders directing those they control to kill the innocent should be condemned. At home, the King recognised the very best of us – people who give up their time to help those left behind by an often cruel society.

Unpaid and often unheralded, volunteers are inspiring and deserve official recognition for the many acts of compassion which make this a much better country to live in.

We hope that you enjoyed a merry Christmas – for 2024 to be a truly happy New Year, the world needs more kindness and compassion.

Not so Clever

If he had an ounce of respect, James Cleverly would quit as Home Secretary.

And if Rishi Sunak had an ounce of authority, he’d sack a Cabinet Minister widely condemned for joking about drugging women. Cleverly quipping at a No 10 reception about spiking his wife’s drink wasn’t just an ill-advised attempt at bad humour.

This is a senior Conservative politician, in charge of protecting women from predators, somehow thinking it’s a laughing matter. Survivors of spiking aren’t alone in believing that Cleverly is unfit for high office. Many men, as well as other women, have reached the same conclusion. If Sunak keeps Cleverly in his Cabinet, the PM underlines his own unfitness for Downing Street.

Back to reality

Boxing Day sales and sport are a sign of life swiftly returning to normal after the Christmas Day family break.

Shopping and despairing when our football teams play badly are two things we Britons do very well – we’ve had a lot of practice.
