Jamie Carragher has joked that Manchester United should bring in Gary Neville as manager as he responded to a tweet comparing the pundit's record to Erik ten Hag's.

Ten Hag has led United to their worst start to a season since 1930, with Saturday's defeat to West Ham their latest in a line of humiliations this term. The loss saw them drop to eighth in the Premier League table, having already been knocked out of the Carabao Cup and the Champions League.

Their dreadful campaign has seen Ten Hag come under pressure of the sack, as Sir Jim Ratcliffe prepares to complete his deal for a 25 percent stake in the club. And having seen the Dutchman's record this term compared to Neville's at Valencia, Carragher tipped his colleague for the job.

The initial tweet read: "Gary Neville at Valencia: 28 games, 11 losses, 39 goals, 38 goals conceded. Ten Hag 23/24: 26 games, 13 losses, 33 goals, 41 goals conceded. ‘Worst manager ever’ vs Mr ‘Eras come to an end’."

Neville was sacked by the Spanish side following his awful start to his ill-fated reign. And Carragher took the chance to jokingly suggest Neville should take over at Old Trafford, quote-tweeting: "Give it Gary till the end of the season….."

That spell at Valencia during the 2015/2016 campaign remains Neville's only experience of managment. Ten Hag meanwhile is now fighting to save his job at Old Trafford, with little sign he can turn things around.

United had been on top in the first-half of their clash with Hammers, but could not find a way past Alphonse Areola. It means they have now gone four games without a goal in all competitions, though Ten Hag has insisted he can turn things around.

"We were controlling the game and didn't give West Ham United anything, and we created three good chances and we didn't take them. And then one moment of switching off and we are down, we are losing the game and I think that is how I see the performance," he said.

"We have had many setbacks, injuries, but the players who are on the pitch are good enough to win the game. So then it's also about getting into the box and make sure you are there. Make sure you have the willingness to score a goal.

"They are capable of it. I know Rashford can score a goal, Hojlund can score a goal, Antony can score a goal, Garnacho can score a goal, Bruno can score a goal, Scott McTominay can score a goal. So, yeah, we have the scoring abilities in our squad and also from set plays.

"In this moment, we are not doing it and they have to stick together, but also they have to believe in themselves that they can do it and that they get there, where you have to be, and where you have to score.

"First of all, it's the meaning of the first goal, and when you're controlling the game and you have to take the goal. But, of course, when you are not scoring the first goal, you have to show character and personality as a team, and you have to fight back."
