There's nothing more frustrating than boiling water on the hob and it bubbling over causing a mess - but there's a simple trick to stop it from happening.

Trying to keep a pan of water boiling without it spilling over can be tricky, but people have been left mind-blown with this simple technique that makes sure it never happens. It can be a nightmare to have to try and clean up on the hob, but one TikToker has been hailed a hero for showing people how to stop it - and there's something you can simply add to stop it.

As they took to TikTok to share the handy video, the content creator who shares simple life hacks under the name @lifehack has made people's lives easier with their simple tricks, and the latest video has people's minds blown. They wrote alongside the video: "Still didn't believe it so had to try it myself!"

The video creator videoed a boiling pan of water and what looks to be pasta on the stove bubbling away, about to spill over the sides, until they threw an ice cube into the pot. The water then simmered down and stopped bubbling over the top. The counter-intuitive idea has people shocked at how simple it is.

When the water starts to boil, adding an ice cube means there's a sudden shift in the temperature, which means the water cools down a little and stops boiling. To explain it further, Experts at physics.stackexchange.com told The Express: "It will then take some time for the heat from the burner to heat the water back up to boiling."

"The reason this hack is equally effective for preventing spillovers is twofold, According to Southern Living. The wood acts as a water repellent on the unstable bubbles, which in turn causes them to destabilise and stop rising. Home safety experts recommend using the hacks intelligently, however, to ensure safety remains a priority in the kitchen."

People were quick to comment their amazement at the idea, as one person chimed: "Mind-blown. I didn't believe it, so I had to try it myself," while another gave an alternative suggestion and said: "You can also lay a wooden spoon across the top of the pot and it won't boil over."
