Man, 19, dies after driver loses control of car and hits central barrier
A young man has died after a single-vehicle crash on the M62, police said today.
A grey Vauxhall Astra was driving westbound near junction 21 for Rochdale, Greater Manchester, when the driver lost control and the car hit the central barriers at about 10.30pm on Thursday, the force said.
It then crossed into the eastbound carriageway and overturned. The 19-year-old was a passenger and was declared dead at the scene.
The driver, also 19, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody. Another passenger was unhurt.
Greater Manchester Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit is appealing for witnesses. The force are also keen to speak to anyone who may have any footage, including dashcam, mobile phone footage from the area in the moments leading up to the collision.
The motorway remained fully closed between junction 21 and junction 22 for Denshaw, near Oldham, overnight and into this morning as police continued to investigate the smash. Diversions were in place for motorists intending to use both sides of the motorway. Westbound queues were back to junction 23 for Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Eastbound traffic was, at around 8.45am, back to the A627(M) link for Rochdale and Oldham, which was also busy as a result.

Although the M62 reopened in both directions at around 9.30am, there are still severe delays on the motorway. Travel service Inrix says: "Severe delays and queueing traffic due to earlier accident, one vehicle involved on M62 Westbound from J22 A672 (Rishworth Moor) to J21 A6193 Sir Isaac Newton Way (Milnrow). Congestion to J20 (Rochdale) on the eastbound side, the A640 Elizabeth Road and roads through Denshaw including the A640 Huddersfield Road and A672 Oldham Road as traffic diverts around the closure."
As Manchester Evening News reported earlier this morning, National Highways said: "The M62 in Greater Manchester is closed in both directions between J21 (Milnrow, near Rochdale) and J22 (Denshaw), due to a serious collision."
In a tweet posted at 5.50am, North West Motorway Police said: "The closures on M62 between j21 and j22 both east and west bound will be remaining on for the foreseeable future due to a serious Police incident, find an alternative route if possible."
Tributes have been shared online to the teenager and his family. Writing on Facebook, strangers shared their thoughts to the man's family, particularly at this time of year. One Facebook user posted: "Poor family of that young lad." Another said: "So close to Christmas... My thoughts are with the person's family and friends at such a difficult time so sad." A third stated: "So sorry for the young mans family. What a horrible way for them to start Christmas." Greater Manchester Constabulary is yet to publicly named the victim.
