Madonna admits she thought of her mother during near-death experience

Madonna has confessed that the first thought she had when she nearly died was of her mother.

The global superstar has put her recent brush with death when she nearly died of a bacterial infection in June behind her as she tours around the globe but she hasn't forgotten the experience and has opened up about how she felt at the time. Talking to the crowd at her sold out show in Brooklyn she admitted that the ordeal has also reminded her how precious time is.

She said: "I do not take anything for granted. There are some very important people in this room tonight that were with me in the hospital. There's one very important woman who dragged me to the hospital. I don't even remember - I passed out in my bathroom, I woke up in the ICU."

She added: "Thank you, Shavawn. She saved my life." Shavawn Gordon-Rissman is the wife of Madonna's former gardener Nathan Rissman who she got to direct the 2008 Malawi documentary I Am because We Are. Shavawn also worked as Madonna's nanny after forming a close friendship with her.

She also name-checked her Kabbalah teacher Eitan Yardeni saying: "I was in an induced coma for 48 hours, and the only voice I heard was his. I heard him say, 'Squeeze my hand.'" Madonna also talked about her first thoughts when she woke up and saw all six of her children surrounding her and felt sad that she could have left them at a young age like her and her own mother when she was just five years old.

She said: "The first thing that went through my head was my mother. My mother died, of cancer, and she was by herself, and I was thinkin', 'What if I left my children?' That would destroy me to leave my children at this moment in their lives." She added: "How scared she must have been to know that she was going to leave us all behind."

Madonna's mother Madonna Ciccone died in 1963 and was survived by her six children and her husband. Madonna's father eventually remarried and had another two children.
