Police have revealed the hunting knife bought on a family holiday which was used to murder Brianna Ghey.

Brianna, 16, a transgender girl, died after being stabbed 28 times in a park near Warrington earlier this year, a trial at Manchester Crown Court heard. A boy and a girl, who are identified only as Girl X and Boy Y, were found guilty today of the frenzied knife attack that was described as "horrific" by police. She was stabbed by the pair, who are now 16 but were 15 at the time, with a hunting knife 28 times in her head, neck, chest and back in broad daylight after being lured to a park in the town of Warrington on February 11.

Boy Y told the murder trial that he bought the knife in January from a "souvenir shop" during a family holiday abroad. He claimed that he just wanted to "admire the craftmanship." The day after Brianna's murder, the knife was discovered in a cupboard in his bedroom. The blade contained Brianna's blood and his DNA on the handle.

A jury of seven men and five women convicted the two following a four-week trial at Manchester Crown Court, after just four hours and 40 minutes of deliberations. Justice Amanda Yip told the jurors: "You probably didn’t anticipate sitting on a case as emotionally difficult as this one." The trial heard that the pair were intelligent and had a fascination with violence, torture and killing. They had planned the attack for weeks, detailed in a handwritten plan and phone messages found by detectives. They had also discussed killing others.

Justice Yip said she won't be sentencing the pair this week. She said a life sentence was mandatory but that she would await psychologists' reports to decide how long the minimum prison time the pair will be required to serve before being eligible for parole. She said: Frankly I don’t expect them to make a huge difference to the outcome in sentencing but given their ages and the unusual circumstances of the case, I think it is right I have all the information available."

In response to the verdict, Girl X spoke to her social worker and glanced at her parents when leaving the courtroom, while Boy Y, avoided all eye contact and did not look over at his mother as he was led from the dock carrying his Sudoku puzzles book.

Boy Y has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and is non-verbal and Girl X has traits of autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Outside the court, Brianna's mother said her killers have not shown "an ounce of remorse" but called for some empathy and compassion for the families of the convicted pair.

Speaking outside court this afternoon, Ms Ghey said she had lost all sympathy for her daughter’s killers and is glad they will spend “many years in prison and away from society”. She stated: "Brianna was larger than life, she was funny, witty, and fearless. We miss Brianna so much and our hearts feel empty without her laughter.

"To know how scared my usually fearless child must have been when she was alone in that park with someone she called her friend will haunt me forever. Prior to the trial I had moments where I felt sorry for the defendants because they had ruined their own lives as well as ours but now knowing the true nature and seeing no remorse for what they have done to Brianna I have lost all sympathy that I may have had for them and I am glad they will spend many years in prison."

The mum also thanked the couple who discovered her daughter and the first officer on the scene for doing all they could “to help my precious child”.

She said: “I’m so grateful that in the last moments of her life she had the concern and kindness from you all, and I undoubtedly know that you did all you could do to help my precious child.”

She also thanked the jury for “making the right decision” and for ensuring “society is now a safer place”. The mother added: “Lastly, please have some empathy and compassion for the families of the young people convicted of this horrific crime. They too have lost a child and they must live the rest of their lives knowing what their child has done.”

She finished her statement by saying her family request “healing space” for the next few weeks, but promised to be back at the end of January to continue campaigning for better mental health support for young people and their families.
