Married At First Sight's Mel Schilling has revealed she has cancer.

The 51-year-old E4 star announced the heartbreaking news in a post on Instagram, telling followers she was diagnosed last week. She penned: "'YOU HAVE CANCER', Three little words that everyone dreads but no one ever expects to hear."

Posing alongside husband Gareth Brisbane, 51, and daughter Madison, eight, Mel, who appeared as a dating coach on MAFS, revealed her colon cancer diagnosis. "Last Thursday my consultant told me those 3 words," she explained in her latest upload.

Mel told fans she noticed a pain in her stomach while out filming in Australia. "About a month ago when I was filming in Australia I developed severe stomach cramps on set, I put it down to all the travel I'd been doing and the upset it caused to my system."

She added: "I saw my GP in Sydney and he put it down to constipation, gave me some laxatives and sent me on my way." Mel returned to the UK and booked herself a scan, despite her initial diagnosis Down Under.

"On Thursday I was told I had colon cancer and in an instant my whole life changed," Mel added, revealing she's heading to hospital on Wednesday to remove the 5cm tumour in her colon that could have "killed her" if it had "gone undetected".

The Channel 4 personality says she'll be spending Christmas in hospital, recovering from the treatment. "I'm expected to make a full recovery though it's a rough road ahead. I also feel so lucky to have an incredible support network around me, both personally and professionally, my own family and my TV family have been amazing this past few days."

Mel has given her tumour a name, Terry, adding: "It will be so tough to spend Xmas Day in hospital instead of being surrounded by family but getting rid of Terry (what I've named my tumour) will be the best present of all."

Concluding with a warning, Mel penned: "I just wanted to finish by saying that if something doesn't feel right, please, please don't ignore it and if you don't think the answers you have got are right, keep going until you do, it might just save your life."

Friends and fans raced to Mel's comments section after her announcement, with I'm A Celebrity and This Morning's Josie Gibson amongst those sending well-wishes. She wrote: "Mel, I am so sorry. I am sending you so much love. Your a life Angel."

Show star Tahnee Cook added: "Sending you & your family all my love, strength & support." While Coleen Nolan penned: "Thinking of you Mel… you’re a force to be reckoned with and you can do this! Sending you so much love."

Another friend and follower wrote: "Oh Mel, my heart goes out to you so much. I am in shock and saddened by this news. I consider you a friend of mine. Please stay strong and positive I know you have a fantastic mind set. I will pray for you every single night and god will give you all the strength and courage to fight this. I send my love to you and your family. We all love you Mel hugs."
