Kate Middleton put William "at ease" after the Prince of Wales displayed "nerves" at the Royal Variety Performance.

Body language expert Darren Stanton has claimed William appeared "nervous" during the show, which aired on the BBC on Sunday night and saw the likes of Cher, Paloma Faith, Rick Astley and Britain’s Got Talent winner Viggo Venn perform.

But the presence of wife Kate, who is now the Princess of Wales, at his side made sure the nerves didn’t take over and the royal couple seemed to both "fully let go" and enjoy the night – much like his late grandmother, the Queen, would have done.

At one point both William and Kate were seen erupting into fits of giggles at jokes from comedian Tom Allen and host Bradley Walsh. Expert Darren, who is known as the Human Lie Detector for his skills, said their laughter was “completely genuine” and there was “no sign of them faking any of their emotions”.

Speaking to Betfair Casino, Darren revealed: “Seeing Kate and William laughing together just shows how natural and how down to earth they are as a couple when they’re together. They’re always up to have a laugh when they’re in each other’s company.

“They have followed in the footsteps of the late Queen as we saw them laughing together at the Royal Variety. The Queen never failed to show she was enjoying herself - and Kate and William’s appearance reminds me of this.”

Giving a more detailed body language analysis, Darren continued: “William touched his tie briefly, and while this can be a gesture of reassurance, William may have done this as he was feeling nervous with the attention being on him.

“But Kate’s presence by his side put him at ease, as the nerves didn’t take over. Apart from that, they both really enjoyed themselves. There were no signs of them faking any of their emotions. They wanted to be there and they could fully let go. It was a very natural appearance from the both of them.”

This year’s Royal Variety Performance, which was filmed at the Royal Albert Hall, was dubbed the most risque yet after singer Zara Larsson performed in a very skimpy outfit – while Paloma Faith suffered a wardrobe malfunction on stage with one fan joking her “pavlovas almost escaped”.

Both Paloma and headliner Cher were also accused of miming on stage. While comedian Simon Rodkin was slammed over a “disgusting” joke about the Covid pandemic.

Host Bradley Walsh told the audience that Simon was responsible for several viral moments, which included throwing money at former FIFA President Sepp Blatter during a press conference. He also famously handed former Prime Minister a P45 during a Conservative Party conference.

Opening his set in front of Their Royal Highnesses, Simon said: "I am the guy that did all the stunts and people always want to know if my stunts ever go wrong. Occasionally, in late 2019 I broke into this laboratory in Wuhan, sorry." Although the audience laughed at his joke, viewers at home were not impressed.

One raged: "The Wuhan joke was very poor taste. Many lost loved ones, or remain poorly - not funny." While a second fumed: "HOW dare you make a DISGUSTING joke about the pandemic? I will be making a complete Ofcom about this you should be ashamed of yourself."
