Derek Draper was last seen in public supporting his wife Kate Garraway.

The 56-year-old political advisor has been seriously ill since contracting coronavirus in the early days of the pandemic in 2020. Good Morning Britain presenter Kate has since shared Derek has returned to hospital after he suffered a heart attack. His family have been at his bedside as Kate has canceled all radio and TV work.

Derek spent 13 months in hospital, making him Britain’s longest suffering Covid-19 victim with long-lasting organ damage and requiring 24/7 care at home. He was said to be looking forward to a big family Christmas with wife Kate and their two children, Darcey, 17, and 14-year-old Billy.

However, he is now "fighting for his life" after a sudden heart attack. Derek was last spotted back in June when he supported Kate as she received her MBE from Prince William at Windsor Castle. She was recognised for her services to broadcasting, journalism and charity.

Derek was seen proudly watching on in a dark blue suit with a light blue shirt and patterned tie and beamed from ear to ear as he sat in a wheelchair. After being awarded the honour, Kate took to Instagram to place the focus on her husband's "determination" to watch her collect the MBE.

Posting on Instagram, Kate said: "Well what a week, that started with Derek in hospital and ended with Derek in hospital, but with this extraordinary day in the middle. I am so incredibly moved and humbled by the whole experience. So many of you have sent so many lovely messages, including the lady who stopped her car a few minutes ago outside our house to say 'I know what you're going through, and I know how much that moment meant and I am a nurse'.

"It was so wonderful to see Derek's determination to be there, so kind of the Prince of Wales, to make it special for him and to recognise the work of Jake our incredible carer, who represents all those who make Derek's daily life possible, and of course my long-suffering, Mum and Dad!"

She continued: "It was also so humbling to meet all the others, much more deserving than myself, who were there to receive their honours. The Prince of Wales managed to make every single one of them feel as special as they are." The GMB host also revealed Derek burst into tears when she was awarded the MBE.

While talking to Prince William, the two turned around to check in on Derek who was 'very tearful'. Kate is now reportedly “praying for a miracle” as she holds a bedside vigil for her beloved husband. A source told The Sun : “Everyone is praying for a miracle. Derek suffered a massive heart attack earlier this week which has left him fighting for his life all over again.

"It was sudden a shock as he had been doing so well and was in great spirits, looking forward to Christmas at home with the family. This setback has been a huge blow for his family and all the people caring for him.” The source said Kate is by his side “24 hours a day” and is “willing him on to win this latest battle for his life.”

Earlier this year Kate shared how Derek's condition was slightly better, but there was a fear of him dying that never left the family. Speaking to Good Housekeeping, she said: “I’d love to be able to tell you that, since Derek has been home, everything has been easy, that the miracle of him being at home has turned the day-to-day challenges into a breeze. But because we keep having emergency setbacks and he’s had to be rushed back into hospital so many times, the fear of him dying has never left us. The unpredictability of his day-to-day condition means we are living on a rollercoaster.”
